Mother’s Day Gift Idea

Sometimes I think the ‘Antiques’ sign out the front of the shop I visit often might be pushing it.

Same as when I dragged MR around an “antique fair” not so long ago. A better term would be ‘Bric a Brac’ with the odd antique piece thrown in for good measure.

Anyway… I found this rusty billy can at the ‘antique’ shop marked down to $5. Clearly I couldn’t walk past a bargain like that and thought the glorious greens found in succulent plants would compliment the rusty brown and grey of the billy can perfectly.

Happy Mother’s Day Mum – but the billy can stays with me [sorry!]

I’ve added a ‘Succulent’ board to Pinterest – some great ideas for these easy to grow varieties.

Lost sock day

In preparation for Lost Sock Memorial Day tomorrow I thought I’d show you some great new socks that you can buy online to replace those socks that survive as a sad, lonely half. I’m not sure where they go all those missing socks, but I ‘m pretty sure they won’t be far away from missing hair ties, hair clips and lids from plastic containers.

Grey Gardens

A few months ago we took a bit longer than a five minute break and booked a few nights away at Grey Gardens in Chewton.  Where??, I hear you ask. Chewton, I’ve never heard of it.  Well, I didn’t know much about it either, but it’s just before Castlemaine [if that helps].  Located in Central Victoria, Chewton is about a 90 min drive from Melbourne. It’s a stunning gold mining town almost frozen in time with many original mid 1800’s buildings still there to admire.  It’s the sort of place that makes me very nostalgic.

Anyway… back to Grey Gardens… I did my research, picked the weekend and had a couple of places I’d found that I thought looked really lovely.  In the end the photos of Grey Gardens sold it for me.  For me this house is all about balance.  The cathedral ceilings give the house an abundance of natural light and a wonderful sense of space.  At the same time the dark grey lounge room wall and black tiling in the kitchen defined the open plan room giving a warm, intimate feel.  With two bedrooms and two bathrooms Grey Gardens would make a perfect getaway with friends or a quiet escape for two.  It has exquisite linen which will want to make you re do your own bedroom at home. The Little Dandelion blanket delicately placed in a basket on the bedroom floor might not fit your bedroom makeover budget, but lovely to admire all the same.

Availability, rates and more stunning photos can be found here.

If it’s toasted, it’s dinner

We have this funny saying in our house that a sandwich is for lunch but if it’s toasted it’s perfectly acceptable for dinner.  Thank goodness Donna Hay agreed with me in Issue 16 of her magazine, if she published it, let’s run with that I say.

Same goes for boiled eggs and toast soldiers.  If I cook them for dinner I get told ‘that’s for breakfast!’ BUT… just recently I discovered the UK design duo Elaine and Stephen of Hop & Peck. Their handcrafted oak egg cups would allow you to serve boiled eggs at your next dinner party.   The table chatter would be about the unique design and superb craftsmanship – your guests would simply forget they were eating a humble boiled egg.

Here are three of my favourites –

2. Scooter [$22.50 AUD]
3. Mr & Mrs [$30 AUD]

The great news is Hop & Peck ship internationally and calculate shipping cost on weight alone – there are no extras charged.

Milly the Mermaid [well almost!]

Perhaps I’ll make a Mabel Mermaid for this year’s Softies for Mirabel Collection.  I’m sure one of the special Mirabel children would love a mermaid with a tail, clothes and different hair styles to play with at Christmas.

Go to Paris and own a Hermes ‘Kelly’ bag today

Ok, so I might be pushing it to get to Paris this afternoon and well… the ‘Kelly Bag’ is a little out of reach too, but just for fun you can have your own travel size paper city of Paris from the VERY talented Made by Joel and a paper Kelly Bag that Hermes put on their Website last year.

I used washi tape before I cut out and assembled the bag and I printed both the paper city and the bag template on cardstock.

If like me you will be in Melbourne this weekend and not in Paris, perhaps you can take your travel size paper city of Paris in your Kelly Bag [designed by you] to one of the many great French Restaurants found here in Melbourne.  Perhaps – Madame Sousou [Fitzroy]vue de monde [CBD] or Libertine [North Melbourne] may appreciate your paper city.
